Sheet metal bending is a type of plastic working, where the deformation of the material takes place through the application of high pressure. The entire process can be carried out cold when the material is thin or hot when the thickness of the material is so great that the necesary pressure exceeds the capacity of the machine. Bending allows you to obtain even a complicated shape while maintaining the thickness of the material used.

How is the sheet bending process performed?

Sheet metal bending is the next stage of production after laser cutting. The bending process takes place on two tools: a die and a punch. There are 3 basic stages of this plastic working:

  1. The stage of elastic deformation of the material, where after removing the pressure, the processed detail can still return to its original shape
  2. The stage of elastic deformation of the material, where the set pressure is so large that it causes a permanent change in the shape of the detail,
  3. The press-in stage where the final shape is obtained.

There are 3 main areas in the material during the bending process. The first one is on the inside of the inflection. In this case, the material layers are compressed which causes a shortening in the longitudinal direction and an elongation in the transverse direction. The second area is on the outer side of the inflection, where the die side material layers are elongated in the longitudinal direction and shortened in the transverse direction. In the middle of the material thickness there is the last area in which the phenomenon of shortening and lengthening is not observed.
